Presented by the loved ones of Liz Walter – a beloved mother, wife, daughter and friend who passed away from pancreatic cancer in early 2017 – and working with the Women’s College Hospital (WCH) Foundation, Reach for the Stars gathered 300 guests for a beautiful gala under the stars to support Women’s College Hospital and celebrate a shared hope for the future of cancer research.
From inspiring remarks by the Walter family, as well as Dr. Steven Narod, director, familial breast cancer research unit and Marilyn Emery, president & CEO, to spectacular performances from Martin Short, Jackie Richardson, Amy Sky, Marc Jordan, Ezra Jordan and Charles & Alexandria Gerard, the evening was nothing short of extraordinary and raised an impressive $1 million through the collective generosity of guests.
Liz’s friend Lisa McCann introduced the Walter family to WCH and its work in hereditary cancers last year. Liz believed that research was the key to saving lives – so much so that after her diagnosis she took part in two research studies aiming to improve pancreatic cancer outcomes despite knowing the results would not help her in time. For this reason and in tribute to Liz, proceeds from Reach for the Stars will be directed towards advancing the work of the hereditary cancers research team at Women’s College Hospital, which is leading the world’s efforts in discovering and understanding the genes that cause pancreatic, breast, ovarian and other cancers.
