TORONTO, ON, October 1, 2014 - Women's College Hospital (WCH) today announced a $2 million gift from Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes, to help build the Hospital of the Future.

WCH is Canada's leading academic, ambulatory hospital and a world leader in women's health. The new Hospital of the Future is an advanced facility unlike any other hospital. It provides ambulatory and outpatient health services combining innovative treatments, surgery, research and education without the need for overnight stays.

"We are extremely grateful for Peter's generosity and vision in helping to, quite literally, revolutionize healthcare," says Marilyn Emery, President and CEO of Women's College Hospital. "We're building a hospital designed to keep people out of hospital, which means we focus on improving treatment options and enhancing patients' quality of life so we can help reduce hospital admissions and visits to the ER. It's the best model of care for our patients and it's a very cost-effective way to improve our health system as a whole."

"I'm always looking to make an impact on peoples' lives through areas of healthcare that are underserved," explains Peter Gilgan. "As a husband, father, and grandfather, I was drawn to the founding mission of Women's College Hospital as a place of healthcare for women, but these folks are also doing an effective job of reducing the cost of healthcare through tremendously innovative programs. That's a big part of the future of healthcare."

Mr. Gilgan shares a passion for women's health and healthcare solutions with Ed Clark, President and CEO of TD Bank Group and Honourary Chair of the Women's College Hospital Foundation board. "The opportunity to work alongside people like Peter who are making the Hospital of the Future a reality is inspiring. Women's College is enhancing the patient experience, improving outcomes and reducing the financial strains placed on our healthcare system. An investment in this institution clearly delivers a huge return to society."

Women's College Hospital achieved a major milestone in May 2013 with the opening of the first phase of its new facility. The second and final phase of construction, including The Peter Gilgan Atrium, the Centre for Ambulatory Care Education and Women's College Research Institute, is on track toward an opening in fall 2015.
