Responding to Emergency Needs
Why it’s important
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our donor community came forward to help the Women’s College Hospital team quickly respond to the community’s most urgent healthcare needs.
Women’s College Hospital redeployed staff throughout key areas to flatten the curve and contain the spread of the virus. We set up Toronto’s first Assessment Centre, then launched Toronto’s first virtual assessment centre. Staff also lent their expertise to our long-term care home partner Kensington Gardens and provided urgent assessments to those who needed it most. We moved 90% of our clinics to virtual to keep patients healthy and safe, never closing the hospital’s doors completely. We created the province’s first COVID care at home program and launched a virtual care program for seniors to ensure the safety and health of this vulnerable population.
It was our donor community that enabled Women’s College Hospital to pivot quickly during COVID. Generous philanthropic support from our community meant we had the funds to meet high priority needs that are not always covered by government funding.
“As we continue our journey, we know that every step of the way, our community is by our side – investing, volunteering, advocating and enabling us to harness the opportunities that emerge from the challenges we face. We are proud and inspired by all of you. Thank you.”

Mrs. Choy’s Story
“My family came to visit me, and they called me on the phone from the parking lot. I was able to go to the window to see them. I was so happy, I cried,” she says. “My son told me that I just needed to focus on getting better and that I still had things to do! So that’s what I did.”
