This October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Heirloome House is partnering with Women’s College Hospital Foundation to support research and care to advance the health of women.
Heirloome House is a Korean Canadian, woman-owned loungewear brand created by co-founders Suzie and Esther, offering soft, comfortable pieces designed for women through every season of life.
For Suzie, supporting Women’s College Hospital is deeply personal.
At 54, Suzie’s mother was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and learned that she carried a BRCA2 gene mutation, which increases a person’s risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. After her mother’s diagnosis, Suzie discovered that she was also a carrier.
Years later, with support from Dr. Pamela Lenkov at Women’s College Hospital, Suzie made the decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy and oophorectomy to reduce her cancer risk.
“I have to sincerely thank Dr. Pamela Lenkov, who was instrumental in guiding me through these difficult decisions, introducing me to BRA Day and empowering me with the information and support that I needed to navigate my own health journey for myself and my family,” says Suzie.
Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day is a yearly event at Women’s College Hospital that brings together leading breast reconstruction experts and people with lived experience to help women explore their breast reconstruction options and make informed decisions about their care.
Suzie’s support for Women’s College Hospital was also inspired by Women’s long history of research into hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. In 1996, Dr. Steven Narod and researchers at Women’s College Hospital helped advance our understanding of BRCA1 and BRCA2, helping reshape how hereditary breast and ovarian cancer risk is understood and managed.
“It feels full circle to do my part in supporting meaningful research that is being done at Women’s College Hospital that gives hope to women like me,” Suzie shares.
Throughout October, 25% of every Heirloome House purchase will be donated to Women’s College Hospital Foundation.
At the heart of the partnership is a belief central to Heirloome House: that women should make space to care for themselves.
“
Our hope in partnering with Women’s College Hospital for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is that you would feel an invitation to take care of yourself, first. By comforting yourself through whatever season you find yourself in, know that you are comforting the woman beside you, too.”
