Black History Month: Celebrating Marilyn Todd
As we celebrate Black History Month at Women’s College Hospital, we reflect upon the inspiring stories of Black Canadians who have made lasting contributions to our hospital and community. One such trailblazer is Marilyn Todd, the second Black woman to be admitted to the WCH School of Nursing, and the first Black student nurse to be voted valedictorian.
From an early age, Marilyn Todd displayed remarkable talent and determination. As a high school student at York Memorial Collegiate, she was an accomplished pianist, winning numerous awards and scholarships at prestigious events such as the Kiwanis and Peel Music Festivals. Her talent even took her to the stage at the Eaton Auditorium and the CNE, where she performed at well-attended recitals. This early passion for music was supported by her family, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams.
After graduating high school, Todd enrolled in the WCH School of Nursing, where she quickly became a respected and admired member of her class. Her fellow nursing students held her in high regard, and in 1958, she was voted class valedictorian. This was a significant achievement as Todd was the first Black student nurse to hold this honour at the school.

Upon graduation, Todd began her nursing career at WCH, working in various specialties including orthopaedics and urology, and ultimately serving as a team leader in surgery. In 1970, she was recruited to join the newly established York-Finch Hospital, where she directed the hospital’s Employee Education program until her retirement in 1997. Throughout her career, Todd was also a dedicated member of the Ontario Nurses’ Association, contributing to its executive committee.
Todd’s legacy extends beyond her work as a nurse. She was an active member of the WCH Nursing Alumnae Association and maintained strong connections with her classmates over the years, always attending their annual dinners. Her long-time friend and fellow alumna, Marilyn Wynn (Moore ’58), fondly remembers Todd as a highly respected and beloved classmate. Sadly, Marilyn Todd passed away in June 2020, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
This Black History Month, we honour Marilyn Todd’s remarkable achievements and celebrate her contributions as an exceptional leader in nursing. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, leadership, and the profound impact an individual can have on their community. Marilyn Todd’s legacy continues to inspire future generations, and we are proud to remember her as part of Women’s College Hospital’s history.
