Meet Dr. Fahima Osman

Dr. Fahima Osman is a breast surgical oncologist at Women’s College Hospital whose work spans the operating room, research lab and world of health innovation. In our latest interview, she shares what drew her to breast cancer care, how technology is reshaping the patient experience and why she’s passionate about mentoring the next generation of women in medicine.
What inspired you to pursue a career in breast surgical oncology, and what continues to motivate you today?
Breast surgical oncology was actually a late-found passion for me. It was a second chapter after spending time in acute care and global surgery. What drew me in was how fascinating this field is. Breast cancer isn’t just a surgical disease; it’s a systemic one. And caring for these patients is truly a team effort. We work closely with medical and radiation oncologists, as well as an incredible allied team including genetics, nursing and plastic surgery. Each of us plays a critical role in the journey.
It’s a specialty that really keeps you on your toes. You have to stay current, keep learning and adapt as the way we treat breast cancer continues to evolve. I was also inspired by the pace of research and innovation in this space. There is so much progress, and so much hope. Most importantly, it’s a privilege to care for women at all stages of life, and that’s what continues to motivate me every day.
As a breast surgical oncologist and surgeon-investigator in entrepreneurship and innovation at Women’s College Hospital, how do you see technology transforming the patient experience in cancer care?
Technology is a powerful tool to help us deliver better and more thoughtful care. Cancer care can be overwhelming, not just medically but logistically and emotionally. Both patients and healthcare providers are often navigating a complex journey with a lot to keep track of. Seeing this every day is what motivated me to build tools that simplify that journey, so that patients feel more supported, more informed and more in control during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
As a leader in both surgery and innovation, what advice would you offer to young women aspiring to careers in medicine, research or health entrepreneurship?
Go all in. It’s one of the most rewarding careers you can pursue, and I feel incredibly grateful to be here. I hope my story inspires them and I always try to take the time to mentor because I see myself in them. It’s not an easy road, but I would say: stick with it and dream big, because success will taste even sweeter. And finally, surround yourself with people who inspire you. They’ll be the ones cheering you on when the road gets tough.
How does donor support help accelerate innovation in breast cancer care at Women’s College Hospital, and what future breakthroughs could philanthropy help make possible?
Donor support is absolutely essential, especially in a publicly funded healthcare system where resources are often limited. I’ve seen firsthand how philanthropy can bring ideas to life, support meaningful research and create programs that truly transform patient care.
To our donors: your support makes a real and tangible difference. Whether it’s enabling new technologies, advancing research or improving access to care, your contributions help us go beyond what’s possible and deliver the level of care our patients deserve.
Outside of your clinical and research work, what brings you joy or helps you recharge?
My family is my greatest source of joy. Spending quality time with them helps me recharge and keeps me grounded in what truly matters. I also love traveling and being in nature, getting outside, and just taking a moment to appreciate life…best way to recharge.
